How to Make Moong Dal Khichdi
Step 1: Rinse the Rice and Dal
In a bowl, rinse 1/2 cup of moong dal and 1/2 cup of rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch.
Step 2: Heat the Pot
In a pot or pressure cooker, heat 1 tablespoon of oil or ghee over medium heat. Add 1/2 teaspoon of cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
Step 3: Add Vegetables
Once the cumin seeds start to splutter, add the chopped onion. Sauté until it turns golden brown. Then add the chopped tomato, carrot, green chilies, and ginger-garlic paste (if using). Cook for a few minutes until the vegetables soften.
Step 4: Add Spices
Add a pinch of turmeric powder and salt to taste. Mix everything well.
Step 5: Add Rice and Dal
Now, add the rinsed moong dal and rice to the pot. Stir everything together.
Step 6: Add Water
Pour in 2-3 cups of water, depending on how soft you want your khichdi. For a softer texture, add more water.
Step 7: Cook
If using a pressure cooker, cover and cook for about 3-4 whistles. If using a pot, cover and simmer for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally until the dal and rice are soft and cooked.
Step 8: Serve and Enjoy!
Once cooked, give it a good stir. Your Moong Dal Khichdi is ready! Serve it hot with a dollop of yogurt or a sprinkle of fresh coriander on top.
